Northern Alberta Xtreme (2) vs Calgary International Hockey Academy (5) U15
The Northern Alberta Xtreme started their U15 season with a southbound roadtrip, picking up a win and a loss against Edge School before taking on the Calgary International Hockey Academy come Sunday. Calgary had been awaiting NAX all weekend to get their season underway, and while NAX hit the front, Calgary rallied from the 1-0 deficit. Max Raymond (1G, 2A) tied the game at one merely 24 seconds after CIHA went behind, and from there, NAX wouldn’t recover. Jack Blair and Landon Dalziel (1G, 1A) followed up Raymond’s goal to give CIHA a two-goal lead, with Oliver Tisnic (26/28) shutting the door and picking up the win for Calgary.
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (1) vs Delta Hockey Academy Black (10) U15
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna split their first two games of the season, starting this weekend with a win and then a loss against BWC in the U15 division. Unfortunately for RINK, they ran into a Delta Black squad still riding high from a comeback shootout win over PCHA on Saturday. Darri Gudmundson gave Delta an early lead, with Tanner Hadlow quickly equalizing for RHA Kelowna. That, however, would be the high point of Sunday for RHAK. Ryan Romano (2G, 1A) scored shorthanded to give Delta the lead, with DHA Black opening the floodgates from there. Easton Medved (1G, 3A) led the way with four points in the 8-1 win.
King’s Edgehill School (6) vs Ontario Hockey Academy Mavericks (8) East
The Ontario Hockey Academy Mavericks play only twice in September, starting with a King’s Edgehill School squad that lost on Saturday against Kuper Academy. KES were the better side in the first period, with Eli Strum scoring the only goal. In the second, the offence was blown wide open, with seven goals in total sending the game tied at four into the third period. It looked like King’s Edgehill had pushed themselves to the cusp early in the third, with Liam Boone (2G, 1A) and Alex Hannah (2G, 1A) opening up a 6-4 lead. The Mavericks suddenly took control, though. Adam Fidrmuc scored his second of the game on the powerplay, Elliot Sullivan tied the game at six, and then Joaquim Beaudry gave the Mavericks the lead with goals barely more than six minutes apart. Tomas Host sealed the deal for OHA with a goal late in the third to complete the Mavericks’ comeback win.
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (5) vs Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy (2) U17 Prep
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna’s U17 Prep squad did all the necessary damage in the first period on Sunday against Coeur D’Alene. Will Tidsbury got things going on the powerplay early, with RHA Kelowna grabbing three more late in the first period to take a 4-0 lead. Jaxon Lodge scored 94 seconds into the second to make it 5-0, and while CDA would push back with a couple goals later on, they couldn’t get close to RINK Kelowna in their eventual 5-2 win.
St. George’s School (4) vs STAR Hockey Academy (1) U15
St. George’s School and STAR Hockey Academy kicked off their U15 season on Saturday, with St. George’s emerging with a win, the perfect start to their season. The second of their weekend back-to-back kicked off Sunday morning, and while the first period was stagnant and scoreless, St. George’s School took over the game in the second. Adam Johnson (2G, 1A) grabbed two powerplay goals and Rhys Borisoff’s (1G, 3A) goal in the second period stood as the game-winner in the Saints’ 4-1 win.
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (7) vs Edge School (3) U17
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg bested Edge School in an 8-5 thriller on Saturday, with Sunday a rematch at Edge before Winnipeg make their way back to Manitoba. Edge School near stopped fighting on Sunday, but ultimately, Winnipeg managed to take and hang on to the lead safely. Mateo Saldivar (2G) and Owen Anderson (2G) scored early to make it 2-0, and while Edge School would get back within one at both the first and second intermissions, RHAW made sure their lead was safe in the third. Anderson grabbed his second of the game and Julien Crook (2G, 3A) posted five points.
STAR Hockey Academy (5) vs Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy (3) U17 Prep
STAR Hockey Academy came into their Sunday clash with the Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy having bested Wenatchee in both of their previous two head-to-head clashed this weekend already. STAR won 8-4 on Friday and 6-3 on Saturday, hoping to make it three from three to start the season in Wenatchee Sunday morning. Wenatchee took the lead through Hunter McIntosh (1G, 2A), but were quickly pegged back by Riley O’Brien (2G). The second period was all STAR, with O’Brien’s second, Aaron Comer, and Benton Fuller providing the goals that helped STAR open up their lead. Wenatchee struck back with a pair of goals in the third, but couldn’t tie the score, and STAR hanging on for the 5-3 win.
Okanagan Hockey Academy (4) vs Yale Hockey Academy (2) U15
Jase Chyld had the overtime winner between these two teams on Saturday to lift Yale to a crazy 6-5 victory, with Sunday the second half of their back-to-back weekend against Okanagan Hockey Academy. Yale led through a period, with Ty Mills’ goal giving the Lions the lead after 20 minutes, but OHA rallied from there. Slowly building momentum, OHA’s penalty kill provided a strong foundation, with second-period goals from Hunter Borba (2G) and Kane Fitzgerald giving OHA the lead, and Liam Rosse making it 3-1 early in the third. The two sides would trade a goal apiece late in the third, but Smith Elliot (29/31) made all the saves his team needed to close out OHA’s win.
Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (2) vs Delta Hockey Academy White (3) U15
Delta Hockey Academy White shut out the Pacific Coast Sea Devils 4-0 on Friday night to kick off both team’s U15 campaigns, with the second of their weekend clashes coming Sunday morning. It looked like Delta White’s day again early on Sunday, with Max Pascual and Aaron Neilson making it 2-0 Delta within the first three minutes and nine seconds of the game. Delta White kept the puck on their sticks for much of the game, simply suffocating the Sea Devils out of a comeback effort, but when presented an opportunity, Pacific Coast struck on the powerplay to make it 2-1. Emmett Wahl extended Delta White’s lead further to make it 3-1, with PCHA’s efforts at a comeback ultimately unsuccessful. Despite the loss, PCHA’s Hunter Villecourt stole the show by making 47 saves on 50 shots.
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (3) vs Calgary International Hockey Academy (4/OT) U17 Prep
The U17 Prep contingent for the Calgary International Hockey Academy bested Northern Alberta in a pair of high-event outings on Thursday and Friday, waiting for RINK Hockey Academy and their third game of the season to get going on Sunday. Two goals in 60 seconds early in the first period sent the Calgary International Hockey Academy on their way, but after Jaxon Dalziel scored his first goal of the season, CIHA couldn’t follow it up with another. Charlie Marin provided Winnipeg with a response late in the period, with RINK Winnipeg slowly but surely working their way back into the game. David Ring (1G, 1A) tied the game in the second and Eli Wasylyk had turned it all the way around to give Winnipeg the lead. Now down 3-2, CIHA found their offensive legs, with Madden Rome (1G, 1A) tying the game late in the third. A brilliant individual effort from Juma Kinchen (1G, 1A) in overtime won it for Calgary, with Kitchen’s dart through the offensive zone seeing him end the game with a great move to the forehand.
BWC Academy (9) vs St. George’s School (4) U17 Prep
St. George’s School’s U17 Prep squad started their season against BWC on Sunday, with BWC likewise not yet having started their season until their trip to UBC to face the Saints. The first half of the hockey game was a high-event evenly fought clash that didn’t provide either team with the lead into the second period. With the game tied at four, BWC’s powerplay broke through. Ethan Kartadinata (2G, 1A) and Rhys McFarlane (2G, 1A) scored a pair late in the second to make it 6-4 BWC, with McFarlane following it up with a goal early in the third to extend his team’s lead. BWC eventually secured a 9-4 win.
STAR Hockey Academy (4) vs Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy (1) U17
STAR Hockey Academy completed a season-opening sweep of Coeur d’Alene on Sunday, riding heavy special-teams work and a monster 49-shot outburst to a 4-1 win, the third straight victory over CDA in as many days. Ben Caldwell (2G) opened the scoring on the power play just past the ten-minute mark of the first, and Mikah Ramsay (1G) doubled the lead late in the second, also with the man advantage, on a setup from Dallas Toth (1A). Coeur d’Alene finally got on the board early in the third through Seth Jemmings (1G), but STAR answered immediately with a power-play goal from Matthew Atherley (1G) off a feed from Ryezen Bertsch (1A), and Caldwell capped his two-goal night with the eventual finisher with under six minutes to play. Dantaie Franklin was sharp once again in net, stopping 19 of 20 for the win, while Ethan Sweetland faced a heavy workload in a losing effort, turning aside 45 of 49 shots for Coeur d’Alene.
Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (6) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (3) U17
Pacific Coast Hockey Academy exploded for six goals in the first 40 minutes and cruised from there, downing RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna 6-3 on the road Sunday. Blake Bidney (2G) opened the scoring less than a minute in, and Jamie Davidson (1G, 2A) made it 2-0 midway through the first before Bidney’s second, this one on the power play, pushed the lead to three. Oli Peck (1G) answered for RHAK on the man advantage late in the frame, but PCHA’s Ryder Acland (2G, 1A) took over in the second, scoring twice in a span of under five minutes, sandwiched around a Marcus Adams (1G, 2A) tally, to make it 6-1 through 40 minutes. RHAK mounted a spirited but ultimately futile push in the third, with Parks Orton (1G) and Hamish Colquhoun (1G) each finding the back of the net to make things interesting. James McRae stopped 27 of 30 for the win, while RHAK turned to two goaltenders in the loss, with Joel McMillan allowing six on 26 shots before Griffin Prairie Chicken shut the door the rest of the way, stopping all 14 shots he faced.
OHA Edmonton (4) vs Northern Alberta Xtreme (5/SO) U17
Northern Alberta Xtreme flipped the script on OHA Edmonton, needing extra time to avenge Saturday’s loss with a 5-4 shootout win Sunday. Darius Paradayil (2G) struck early to give OHA the lead, but NAX answered with back-to-back goals in the second from Holter Lefthand (1G, 1A) and Landon Russell (1G) to go ahead, only for Kirk Girard (1G, 1A) to level it again before the break. The third period was a track meet in miniature: Paradayil’s second put OHA back in front just 37 seconds in, Colby Crone (1G) tied it for NAX, Boston Engel (1G) restored the OHA lead, and Zuan Jenkinson (1G) answered right back to force overtime. Neither side could solve the opposing netminder in the extra frame, sending the game to a shootout, where Crone was the lone conversion to seal it for the home side. Kole Imlay (3A) and Wim Coderre (3A) were both held off the scoresheet as scorers but quietly stayed involved on nearly every OHA marker. Nixon Riggins made 36 saves for the win, while Alton Skelhorne stopped 33 of 37 in a hard-luck loss.
OHA Edmonton (5) vs Edge School (1) U17 Prep
OHA Edmonton bounced back from Saturday’s loss with a dominant 5-1 win over Edge School on Sunday, getting scoring from six different players in a balanced team effort. Hunter Jacobs (1G, 1A) opened the scoring just past the five-minute mark, and Edge answered through Natthakorn Bulakul (1G) to briefly tie things, but OHA closed out the first with a pair in the final minute, as Jiseong Kim (1G, 1A) and Easton Charpentier (1G) made it 3-1 heading to the intermission. Aaron Jackson (1G) extended the lead on the power play in the second, and Kane Strudwick (1G) added an early third-period marker to cap the scoring. Jaxson Weisgerber (2A) was held off the scoresheet as a scorer but factored into two more goals to lead all players with three assists on the weekend. Rowen Germain made 21 saves for the win, while Chase Miles stopped 22 of 27 in the loss.
Delta Hockey Academy (2) vs Yale Hockey Academy (3) U15 Prep
The debut game between two Lower Mainland rivals did not disappoint. The first meeting of the season between Delta and Yale had the Lions striking first as Jack Hagen deflected home the first goal of the season for the home side. In the second, Brady Barrett would bash home a rebound to double Yale’s advantage. Delta would find their first soon after as Alex Iaichkin roofed a backhander after finding himself on a clear cut breakaway. In the later minutes of the second, Killian Wall (1G, 2A) would restore Yale’s two goal advantage off a strong solo effort down the left wing before wiring one shortside. Seven Xie would get Delta back to within one before the end of the frame with his point shot finding its way top shelf. The third would see its fair share of chances. Delta would muster another 13 shots on net but could not find another answer to beat Landon Rivas (30/32). Rivas would back Yale to a 3-2 victory with Wall’s goal standing as the game winner.
Calgary International Hockey Academy (5) vs Edge School (0) U15 Prep
Calgary International Hockey Academy blanked Edge School 5-0 on Sunday, riding a five-goal first-two-periods surge and a perfect night from goaltender Mason Flipchuck, who turned away all 28 shots he faced for the shutout. Cohen St Louis (2G, 1A) opened the scoring less than a minute in, and Rhett Davis (1G) doubled the lead on the power play before Lucas Beaudin (1G) capped a three-goal first period to put the game well in hand early. Colten Smith (1G) extended the margin to four just 31 seconds into the second, and St Louis capped his multi-goal night late in the frame to make it 5-0 heading to the third. Miles Coy (3A) was held off the scoresheet as a scorer but factored into three of Calgary’s five goals.
Yale Hockey Academy (3) vs Delta Hockey Academy (6) U17 Prep
Delta Hockey Academy overcame an early deficit and a chippy, penalty-heavy affair to run away with a 6-3 win over Yale on Sunday. Eddie Kemp (1G) opened the scoring for Yale on the power play in the first, but Delta erupted for three in the second to seize control, with Carson Brown (1G) tying it up before Zach Giles (2G) scored twice in the span of under two minutes to put the visitors ahead. Theodore Kim (1G) answered on the power play to keep Yale within one heading to the third, but Delta pulled away for good from there, getting goals from Colby Walker (1G, 1A) and Josh Racic (1G, 1A) before Bentley Gillis (1G, 3A) capped his big night with a power-play marker. Ryker Stevens (1G, 1A) added a late power-play goal for Yale, but it was well too little too late. Jace Zemanek made 38 saves for the win, while Logan Hwang stopped 32 of 38 in the loss.
